Who we are

UPMC Hillman Cancer Center at San Pietro FBF
UPMC Hillman Cancer Center at San Pietro FBF
UPMC Hillman Cancer Center at San Pietro FBF provides cancer patients the opportunity to receive innovative radiation treatments, including stereotactic radiosurgery. The most advanced linear accelerator on the market today, TrueBeam™ STx, is available at our UPMC San Pietro FBF and can deliver high doses of radiation more quickly and more precisely, allowing for shorter treatments with minimal side effects. Radiotherapy techniques available at UPMC San Pietro FBF allow to treat primary tumors, secondary (metastatic), or recurrent tumors in all parts of the body, and are a valid alternative to invasive surgery for all tumors surgically difficult to reach, and for patients with specific contraindications to surgery. These techniques allow patients to better tolerate pain and can treat not only cancer but also benign tumors and arteriovenous malformations. In 2017 the Center has successfully achieved accreditation from the Joint Commission International (JCI). This recognition is based on an extensive review of the center’s patient safety and quality standards and processes.

History

UPMC Hillman Cancer Center at San Pietro FBF was created in 2013 from a collaboration between UPMC Italy and San Pietro Fatebenefratelli ,a 500-bed hospital with a radiotherapy department constantly focusing on state-of-the-art technology since 1996, when its first linear accelerator delivering three-dimensional conformal radiation therapy (3D-CRT) was inaugurated in its premises, followed in 2009 by intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT).

UPMC Hillman Cancer Center
The UPMC Hillman Cancer Center network (60 locations in the U.S. and Europe) ensures highest standards of care to over 113,000 patients every year. The UPMC oncology network is affiliated with the University of Pittsburgh. Together, the organizations have published over 5,700 research studies in the last five years and were granted research funds of more than $111 million in 2018.
Being part of this network allows every center of the UPMC network, including UPMC Hillman Cancer Center at San Pietro FBF, to be involved in research initiatives that ensure the ongoing development of treatment techniques. The whole team at UPMC Hillman Cancer Center at San Pietro FBF was trained in Pittsburgh and acquired extended practice and expertise in advanced radiotherapy techniques, and quality and safety standards. In addition, thanks to state-of-the-art telemedicine systems, our specialists can share daily experience and clinical cases with their colleagues in Europe and the United States. This model of communication and collaboration allows our Center to rely on the experience of one of the most extensive stereotactic surgery programs in the world, whilst guaranteeing patients the best results and the quality and safety standards of the UPMC cancer centers. UPMC’s cancer program is consistently placed on the U.S. News & World Reports “Best of Best” cancer programs in the United States.

UPMC Italy
UPMC Italy is the Italian division of the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. UPMC Italy operates in the field of patient care, biomedical research, telemedicine, training, construction planning, IT solutions, and provides support to areas directly and indirectly related to hospitals and research institutions.
For over 20 years, UPMC Italy has been managing ISMETT IRCCS a government-approved research hospital and a center for organ transplants and highly specialized therapies. Located in Palermo, ISMETT-IRCCS serves patients from countries throughout the Mediterranean region. ISMETT-IRCCS hosts 114 beds and 8 Day Hospital beds, plus 4 operating rooms. Since the very first liver transplant performed in Sicily, in 1999, over 2,000 transplants have been performed at ISMETT.
In partnership with the Italian government, the Sicilian regional government, the Italian National Research Council (CNR), and the University of Pittsburgh, UPMC  is a founding member of the Ri.MED Foundation and involved in the realization of the Biomedical Research and Biotechnology Center (BRBC) in Carini, near Palermo. With its over 600 researchers, technicians, and administrative staff, the BRBC will become a center of reference for biotechnology research.
Since 2018 UPMC Italy manages the UPMC Salvator Mundi International Hospitathat opened its doors in 1951, making it the first international private hospital in Rome.  UPMC Salvator Mundi International Hospital is an 82- bed general hospital, including 4 intensive care beds, and 12 Day Hospital beds,  specialized in various medical and surgical specialties (internal medicine, general surgery, imaging, rehab and physiotherapy, oncology, etc.). The Hospital is equipped with 6 operating rooms, an intensive care unit, an interventional cardiology suite, an angiography and interventional radiology area, and an area entirely dedicated to first aid, medication, and outpatient surgery. In particular, an integrated Oncology Center will be created and linked to the UPMC Hillman Cancer Center network. In line with the professional experience of UPMC, the plan is to launch new programs and to improve the existing ones, including thoracic and abdominal minimally invasive surgical oncology, interventional radiology, and oncology interventional digestive endoscopy. The oncology clinical offer will be complemented by immuno-oncology therapies and a new oncology genomics service, indispensable to support therapeutic decisions with a personalized medicine approach. All aspects related to the prevention and early diagnosis of oncological diseases will also be developed, and a new dedicated program of Integrative Medicine in Oncology, one of the first in Europe, will be launched.
In 2018, UPMC Italy realized in Mirabella Eclano (Campania), in collaboration with Casa di Cura Villa Maria, the UPMC Hillman Cancer Center at Villa Maria, an advanced radiotherapy center offering treatments for primary tumors, secondary (metastatic) or recurrent tumors in all parts of the body.
