Radiotherapy

All radiotherapy treatments available at UPMC Hillman Cancer Center at San Pietro FBF are performed on an outpatient basis. Treatments are non-invasive, do not cause pain, and require no special medication.
Our medical staff follows patients and works closely with a team of specialists in various areas including: neurosurgery, medical oncology, surgical oncology, medical physics, pathology, diagnostic radiology, nursing, nutrition, and psychology.
Our approach is inspired by the model implemented at UPMC’s cancer centers, where patients are supported by a multidisciplinary staff of specialists.

Intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) gives radiation therapist the ability to align the radiation beam on the target area with more precision and accuracy, particularly in critical situations such as tumors close to the spinal cord, heart, or areas already irradiated in case of recurrent tumors.
In case of small tumors, stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) delivers high-dose irradiation centered on the tumor with millimeter precision, thus sparing surrounding healthy organs and reducing the potential side effects. In some cases, stereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT) focuses on a limited number of sessions compared to conventional radiotherapy.
Image-guided radiotherapy (IGTR) uses advanced imaging technology to improve the accuracy of the treatment and to allow for a better definition of the tumor. Four-dimensional (4D) CT scans deliver more accurate treatment for moving tumors, in relation to the unconscious movement of the chest, abdomen, and surrounding organs (breathing, intestinal peristalsis, pulsations).
At UPMC Hillman Cancer Center at San Pietro FBF, customized positioning and containment systems help immobilize patients and maintain their position during all treatment sessions.
