Fourth UPMC Annual Symposium on Radiotherapy – October 20-21, 2016

Fourth UPMC Annual Symposium on Radiotherapy – October 20-21, 2016

The 4th annual symposium of the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, entitled “SRS/SBRT challenges compared to traditional radiotherapy” took place on October 20-21, 2016 in the premises of the Chamber of Commerce in Rome.

This year’s symposium focused on the challenges of intracranial stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) and stereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT) in terms of doses, volumes, re-treatment, and interactions with other therapies. The event welcomed a total of 130 participants including radiation oncologists, physicists, radiotherapy technicians and nurses, allied health professionals, medical oncologists, neurosurgeons, and researchers. Event participants came from several countries including Italy, US, Germany, France, Spain, Belgium, Denmark, Australia, and Romania. The symposium  is an extraordinary opportunity to further disseminate knowledge on these advanced techniques for the care of cancer patients in Europe and around the world.

Radiotherapy today plays a crucial role in the treatment of a growing number of oncology diseases, and offers state-of-the-art therapeutic solutions for various neoplastic pathologies such as those affecting the lung, liver, prostate, and brain. The event was organized with the collaboration of UPMC San Pietro FBF Advanced Radiotherapy Center, part of UPMC’s oncology network.
UPMC San Pietro FBF Advanced Radiotherapy Center was one of the first centers in the Region of Lazio to offer innovative SRS and SBRT treatments using the TrueBeam™ STx, a latest generation linear accelerator delivering high doses of radiation more rapidly and with more precision compared to the most common accelerators, thus reducing the duration of therapy and limiting the side effects. All treatments performed at UPMC San Pietro FBF follow protocols and guidelines based on efficacy data collected and studied at the University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute and within UPMC’s oncology networkThe event, endorsed by the European SocieTy for Radiology and Oncology (ESTRO), AIRO, AIFM, AAMP, was streamed on the Youtube channel of UPMC Italy.
